Banking in Ireland

Ireland has a modern and reliable banking system, making it easy and convenient for students to manage their finances. Most banks open from 10:00am to 4:00pm, Monday to Friday, and until 5:00pm on Thursdays. Some branches also open on Saturday mornings.

Banking fees vary, but many institutions offer special student accounts with reduced fees or even free banking, so it’s a good idea to compare options before opening an account.

Opening a Bank Account

Students should open a bank account soon after arriving in Ireland. To do so, you’ll typically need:

  • A valid passport, driver’s licence, or national ID card
  • Proof of your home address (such as a recent bank statement or utility bill)
  • Proof of your Irish address, which is required under international money laundering regulations
  • Note: It’s not possible to open an Irish bank account from overseas, and most students will only be able to do so after securing local accommodation.

Credit Cards

Visa and Mastercard are widely accepted in Ireland, while American Express and Diners Club cards may have limited acceptance.
