Health Insurance for International Students in Ireland

European Students

Students from EU/EEA member countries are entitled to free public hospital services in Ireland if they hold a valid Form E.109 or a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). This card replaces the old E111 and E128 forms and must be obtained from your home country before travelling to Ireland.
It’s important to contact your national health authority in advance to complete any registration requirements and ensure you have the correct documentation for healthcare access while studying in Ireland.

Non-European Students

Students from non-EU countries are not eligible for free medical treatment and must arrange private health insurance before arriving in Ireland. Medical costs, particularly hospitalisation, can be expensive, so adequate insurance coverage is essential.

Proof of valid health insurance is mandatory for:

  • Applying for a student visa
  • Registering with the Garda National Immigration Bureau (GNIB)

Having proper health insurance ensures you can access necessary medical care and avoid unexpected expenses during your studies in Ireland.
